Nominated for the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards' Horizon Award, Fara brings together four young Orcadian musicians at the forefront of today’s Scottish folk scene. Jennifer Austin, Kristan Harvey, Jeana Leslie and Catriona Price’s three fiddles and piano produce a fiery sound, rooted strongly in their upbringing amongst the traditional music of Orkney.

Having been friends since early childhood, they grew up under the musical guidance of Douglas Montgomery (The Chair, Saltfishforty) with the three East Mainlanders of the band in fiddle group Hadhirgaan at Kirkwall Grammar School, and Kristan, from Birsay, in Jenny Keldie’s Shoramere at Stromness Academy. Fast-forward a few years, and between them Fara now hold degrees from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the University of Strathclyde, The Royal Northern College of Music and The Royal Academy of Music.

The idea for Fara came after several appearances as 'The Chairettes', backing band for Orcadian eight-piece, The Chair. At one such gig, they were given a slot to play a couple of sets on their own, and Bob Gibbon, The Chair’s accordionist and Orkney Folk Festival director, suggested they form a new band. Much to The Chair’s great disappointment they decided to lose their original name, and Fara was born.

'I doubt if there’s another band that produce such complex and engaging fiddle music, along with equally complex and engaging song... Fara have all the ingredients for a perfect album, and Times from Times Fall is the proof' - Folk Radio
