LOCAL WORLD WAR ONE HEROINE IS CELEBRATED BY LOCAL THEATRE COMPANY
POSTED: 26/02/2016 18:05:06
The true tale of Dorothy Lawrence is brought to light in Over the Top

Friday 4 March, 7.30pm at The Pound arts centre, Corsham

An inventive new theatre show that tells the astonishing true story of a forgotten Wiltshire World War One heroine will be brought to life by two actors and original music at The Pound arts centre in Corsham this March.

June 1915, Dorothy Lawrence set sail for northern France, intent on becoming the first female war correspondent. Disguised as ‘Private Denis Smith’ she made her way to the frontline of fighting and came face-to-face with the dark heart of war-torn Europe.

Previously undiscovered evidence has revealed that Dorothy spent a significant part of her childhood and adolescence in Salisbury. 100 years on, Bath-based theatre company The Heroine Project Presents brings this extraordinary story to audiences in North Wiltshire on Friday 4 March.

Using a mixture of storytelling and song, and drawing on the music hall tradition, Over the Top takes the audience on a whirlwind journey through Dorothy’s life, to a soundtrack influenced by the shifting musical landscape of the early 20th century. The show is accompanied by a half-hour discussion with director and performers share fascinating new research that has informed the show.

To accompany the show’s premiere in Corsham, The Heroine Project Presents will be running a series of four workshops open to young people in the area between 24 February and 5 March.

There will also be an exhibition display at The Springfield Community Campus from 7 February to 7 March from ‘Wiltshire at War: Community Stories’, which will provide some contextual information for the show.

The Heroine Project Presents tells the stories of women from history who have been overlooked or misrepresented. Over the Top is supported by local arts organizations Pound Arts and The Natural Theatre Company in Bath. The workshops in Corsham are funded by Wiltshire Council through the Corsham Area Board.

Tickets for Over the Top are £10 (£9 concessions) from The Pound box office: 01249 701628 / poundarts.org.uk
