WILTSHIRE HERITAGE VERSUS VIOLENCE: CONTROVERSIAL BATTLE OF THE BEANFIELD RETOLD
POSTED: 24/03/2016 16:28:09
Breach Theatre present The Beanfield at The Pound, Saturday 26 March, 7.30pm

Recent Wiltshire history is being unearthed at The Pound this Saturday. Breach Theatre will be telling the story of the controversial 1985 Battle of the Beanfield in a multimedia show blending new writing with documentary footage.

The June 1985 event occurred when participants in the twelfth annual Stonehenge Free Festival faced an injunction preventing the event from taking place at the prehistoric Wiltshire monument. Around 500 New Age travellers and environmentalists, among them women and children, encountered 1300 police officers in a Wiltshire field. The Battle of the Beanfield as it was subsequently called is still a tale of controversy today.  Eye witness accounts, including from journalists reporting on the event, detail police assault and brutality with mass arrests.

Breach Theatre will be telling this largely forgotten story at The Pound on Saturday, as part of Theatre Fest West 2016. Charity Colborne, Marketing Coordinator at Pound Arts says: “Following its performance in Salisbury we are looking forward to welcoming this creatively engaging examination of the Battle of the Beanfield. Despite being 30 years old, this event is still mired in controversy. Expect a compelling performance as Breach Theatre explores a more uncomfortable part of recent Wiltshire history.”

Breach Thearte are award-winning performance makers crossing disciplines and mashing up media. ★★★★ 'Theatrically ambitious and boldly political' – The Guardian

Tickets for Saturday’s show are £10 (£9 concessions) from The Pound’s box office on 01249 701628 / poundarts.org.uk

Hungarian director László Nemes follows up the success of his Cannes winner Son of Saul with this feverishly ambitious mystery drama about a young girl who grows up to become a strong and frealess woman in Budapest on the event of World War I. Shot on neatuiful 35mm, this absorbing film bears witness to  the flickering innocence of a Europe about to be plunged into hell.
